Chargeable Weight vs Actual Weight: The One-Line Answer
Chargeable weight vs actual weight is the difference between what your scale says and what your invoice says. Actual weight is what the shipment physically weighs. Chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight — and it is the only one of the two that the carrier prices on.
If your goods are dense, the two are the same number and nobody thinks about it. If your goods are light and bulky, the volumetric side wins and you pay for air. That single rule is behind almost every "why is my shipping bill higher than I calculated" question.
Actual Weight vs Gross Weight: The Same Number, Two Words
This one trips people up more than it should: gross weight and actual weight are the same thing — the total weight of the goods plus their packaging, pallet, dunnage and strapping, as it sits on the scale.
The words that actually differ:
- Net weight — the goods alone, no packaging. Used for customs and commercial invoices, never for freight pricing.
- Gross weight / actual weight — everything on the scale. This is what gets compared against volumetric weight.
- Tare weight — the packaging or container alone. Gross minus net.
So if a forwarder asks for gross weight and your calculator asks for actual weight, type the same number into both. And remember the pallet counts: a 20 kg pallet under 200 kg of goods makes your gross weight 220 kg.
Volumetric, Dimensional and Cubic Weight: Three Names for One Idea
Before you can compare chargeable weight vs actual weight, you need the third number — and it goes by three names depending on where you are:
- Volumetric weight — the international and British term
- Dimensional weight (DIM weight) — the American term, and what UPS, FedEx and USPS use
- Cubic weight — the Australian term, used by Australia Post, StarTrack and Toll
All three mean exactly the same calculation: L × W × H ÷ divisor. Only the divisor changes by carrier and mode. Anyone telling you dimensional weight and volumetric weight are different concepts is confusing terminology with substance.
Chargeable Weight vs Actual Weight by Shipping Mode
The comparison is always "greater of the two", but the divisor that produces the volumetric side changes:

Worked Example: Chargeable Weight vs Actual Weight on Dense Cargo
A box of hardware, 30 × 25 × 20 cm, 14 kg on the scale, shipped by express courier.
- Volume: 30 × 25 × 20 = 15,000 cm³
- Volumetric weight: 15,000 ÷ 5,000 = 3 kg
- Actual weight: 14 kg
- Chargeable weight: max(3, 14) = 14 kg
Dense cargo bills by the scale. Shrinking this box saves nothing — the packaging is not the problem.
Worked Example: Chargeable Weight vs Actual Weight on Light, Bulky Cargo
A box of cushions, 60 × 50 × 40 cm, 6 kg on the scale, same courier.
- Volume: 60 × 50 × 40 = 120,000 cm³
- Volumetric weight: 120,000 ÷ 5,000 = 24 kg
- Actual weight: 6 kg
- Chargeable weight: max(24, 6) = 24 kg, rounded up to 24.0
You pay four times the scale weight. Here packaging is the problem, and every centimetre you remove is money back.
Chargeable Weight vs Actual Weight on a Multi-Box Shipment
With more than one box, the comparison itself changes — and this is where most calculators quietly get it wrong. Express couriers take the greater weight per piece and add the results up. IATA air cargo compares the shipment's totals once.
Two boxes: one 60 × 40 × 40 cm at 8 kg, one 35 × 30 × 25 cm at 18 kg.
- Courier: box 1 max(19.2, 8) = 19.2 → rounds to 19.5, ×1; box 2 max(5.3, 18) = 18. Total 37.5 kg.
- Air cargo: totals are 24.5 volumetric against 26 actual → 26 kg.

Why Your Invoice Shows a Weight You Never Measured
Even after you get chargeable weight right, carriers apply rules on top:
- Dimension round-up. UPS and FedEx round every fraction up to the next whole inch (since 18 August 2025); USPS adopted the same on 12 July 2026. An 11.1 in side bills as 12 in before the multiplication.
- Weight rounding. DHL rounds to the next 0.5 kg; UPS and FedEx to the next whole pound; IATA uses a two-step 0.5 kg rule.
- Minimum billable weight. A US-domestic package that trips UPS's Large Package triggers bills at a minimum of 90 lb regardless of what your calculation said. LCL sea freight bills a 1.0 revenue-ton minimum.
Each of these only ever moves the number up. If your figure and the invoice disagree, work through them in that order — the gap is usually one of these three, not an error by the carrier.

Is chargeable weight ever lower than actual weight? No. It is defined as the greater of the two, so it is never below your scale weight.
Is gross weight the same as chargeable weight? No — gross weight is the scale figure. Chargeable weight is gross weight compared against volumetric weight, whichever is larger.
Does the pallet count? Yes, in both directions: its weight adds to gross weight, and its footprint and height add to volumetric weight.
Which weight goes on the customs invoice? Net and gross weight. Chargeable weight is a pricing figure, not a customs one.
