How to Calculate Volumetric Weight

Length × width × height at the outermost points, in cm or inches. Carriers use automated dimensioners — bulges count.
- 02Divide by the divisor
L × W × H ÷ divisor = volumetric weight. Express couriers use 5,000 cm³/kg; IATA air cargo uses 6,000.

Chargeable weight = max(actual, volumetric). Light but bulky boxes get billed on volume, not the scale.
What Volumetric Weight Means
Volumetric weight is the weight a carrier assigns to the space your parcel occupies, rather than what it weighs on the scale. It exists because a box of pillows and a box of bolts take the same room on an aircraft while weighing very differently — pricing purely by mass would let bulky freight travel almost free.
The same calculation goes by three names depending on where you are: volumetric weight internationally, dimensional weight (or DIM weight) in the United States, and cubic weight in Australia. All three mean L × W × H ÷ divisor — only the divisor changes. What you actually pay is the chargeable weight: the greater of volumetric and actual weight. Volumetric Weight Calculator in CM and KG
Metric is the default for international express: L × W × H (cm) ÷ 5,000 = kg. A 60 × 40 × 40 cm carton is 96,000 cm³ ÷ 5,000 = 19.2 kg volumetric. If it weighs 8 kg on the scale, you are billed on 19.2 kg — rounded up to 19.5 kg by DHL.
Volumetric Weight Calculator in Inches and Pounds
Shipping from the US, the divisor is ÷139 in³/lb: an 18 × 14 × 12 in box is 3,024 in³ ÷ 139 = 21.8 lb, billed as 22 lb. Since 18 August 2025 UPS and FedEx round every fractional dimension up to the next whole inch before multiplying, and USPS adopted the same rule on 12 July 2026. The calculator above applies both round-ups, and lets you measure in inches while reading the answer in kilograms.

What is volumetric weight?+
Volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight or DIM weight) is a pricing technique used by shipping carriers. It calculates a package’s weight based on its size rather than its actual weight. The formula is: Length × Width × Height ÷ volumetric divisor.
How do I calculate volumetric weight?+
Measure your package’s length, width and height. Multiply the three dimensions together, then divide by the carrier’s divisor (e.g. 5,000 for DHL/FedEx/UPS in metric, 6,000 for IATA air cargo). The result is the volumetric weight in kg or lb.
What is chargeable weight?+
Chargeable weight (billable weight) is the weight your invoice is based on: the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Express couriers compare per piece and sum; IATA air cargo compares the shipment totals.
Can I measure in inches but get the result in kg?+
Yes. The dimension unit (cm/in) and weight unit (kg/lb) are independent in this calculator. Enter dimensions in inches and read the chargeable weight in kilograms — the conversion happens automatically.
What divisor does DHL / FedEx / UPS use?+
DHL Express, FedEx and UPS international shipments use 5,000 cm³/kg (139 in³/lb). US domestic parcels also use 139 in³/lb — USPS dropped from 166 to 139 on 12 July 2026, so all three major US carriers now match. The softer 166 divisor survives only on UPS walk-in Retail rates. Divisors can still vary by service level and contract.
What is the air cargo divisor 6000?+
IATA air cargo (freight forwarded on airlines, not express courier) uses 6,000 cm³/kg — equivalent to 166.7 kg per cubic meter. Chargeable weight is compared at shipment level: max(total volumetric, total actual).
Why is my shipping cost higher than expected?+
If your package is large but light, the volumetric weight exceeds the actual weight and the carrier bills on volume. Check the "billed by volume" tag in the calculator to see which weight wins for each box.
How do carriers bill multi-piece shipments?+
Express couriers (DHL/UPS/FedEx) calculate max(volumetric, actual) for each piece, then sum. IATA air cargo compares the totals of the whole shipment. The same boxes can produce different chargeable weights under each rule — this calculator handles both.
How do I measure irregular-shaped packages?+
Measure the longest point on each axis — the smallest rectangular box that would contain the package. Carriers use automated dimensioners, so bulges, handles and deformed corners all count.
How can I reduce volumetric weight charges?+
Use right-sized boxes, remove void fill, consider flat or vacuum packaging, and compare carriers — a different divisor or billing mode can change the bill for the same goods.
